Central Kowloon Route – Central Tunnel

Completed Project

The Central Tunnel Contract forms a crucial part of the Central Kowloon Route. We were responsible for constructing an approximately 2.8 km-long dual three-lane tunnel between Yau Ma Tei and Ma Tau Kok. The scope of works also includes two cut-and-cover tunnels at the Yau Ma Tei and Ma Tau Kok Access Shafts, a ventilation shaft, an adit, and foundations for a ventilation building in Ho Man Tin, as well as other associated works.

Running beneath the heart of Kowloon, the Central Tunnel passes adjacent to four MTR lines. Constructing the tunnel in such a densely populated area presents significant engineering and management challenges. The project demands meticulous planning and execution to ensure zero disruption to surface activities and MTR operations. In particular, during drill-and-blast excavation, advanced double-deck explosives charging techniques were adopted in sensitive areas near MTR tunnels and building foundations to minimise disturbance to the surroundings.

The complex geological conditions also posed major challenges. The tunnel alignment crosses seven major fault zones, requiring the use of various excavation methods — including drill-and-blast in rock, traditional excavation, and heavy temporary supports in soft ground — to adapt to a wide range of ground conditions from hard rock to weak soils.
